Created as a way for small opponents to defend themselves against larger opponents, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a combative martial art. Through grappling and ground fighting techniques, students of any size learn how to take on attackers of any size. When standing, students learn takedown techniques and how to gain the best position when they are taken down. On the ground, students learn how to submit opponents through moves like chokes and joint locks.
Training involves repetitively drilling the techniques, and usually requires working with a partner. Another key to training is rolling, a form of sparring. When rolling, one student tries to submit another. To avoid injury, they are taught to tap out when in a dangerous or painful position.
