Kata are choreographed movements in Japanese martial arts. These movements may be done alone or may require a partner, but in both cases they usually simulate attacking and defending techniques in a sequence.
Aikido, Judo, Kendo and Karate are all examples of martial arts that use kata. In the past, they were a way to teach the techniques used in combat and to pass the techniques to other generations. Now the repetitive movements if the sequence are a way for students to memorize techniques and perform them in a natural way. In non-Japanese martial arts, the term "form" can be used for "Kata."
