Kendo Classes in Texas

A Japanese martial art with roots in sword-fighting, Kendo is a fusion of culture and sport. Its philosophy is centered on self-discipline and respect for others. Weapons are the main focus of training. Students wear helmets similar to those worn in fencing, along with other protective armor.

Training is done with a shinai, a Japanese sword. For safety purposes, the sword is made of bamboo or resin. Striking techniques are taught with the sword, which includes strikes with the edge and the tip of the shinai. Unlike some other disciplines, Kendo is noisy. Students yell and stomp their front feet as they strike. A major part of training is forms, or kata.
