Self-defense is, simply put, the art of defending oneself. It can be taught with a variety of martial arts styles, but all self-defense programs have a few things in common. They all teach how to avoid confrontation, and emphasize the importance of getting away from danger quickly.
Students are taught how to defend themselves when in a bad position and how to injure an attacker. This can be done through joint locks, chokes, strikes and other martial arts techniques. A martial art like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is effective because the size of an opponent is irrelevant. Krav Maga and Filipino Martial Arts both have a strong focus on defending against weapons, and are also effective for self-defense.
