Shotokan is the most commonly practiced type of Karate. It uses deep stances to generate power. Speed and power are valued more in Shotokan than in some other forms of Karate, Advanced students learn throwing and grappling techniques, while newer students focus on striking. Striking includes punching, open-hand techniques and kicking. Students are also taught blocking techniques.
All training involves learning the basics, forms and sparring. Philosophy is very important to Shotokan practitioners, and most schools have the five rules of training listed on their walls. These rules include seeking perfection of character, being faithful, trying to excel, respecting others, and abstaining from violence.
